Reborn in 1985: Taking Back My Life

Chapter 9: Blood Before Witnesses

Elena faced the dinner table without lowering her eyes.

"Daniel's nineteen dollars would buy eggs and flour every day," she said. "I also work more than a hundred days in the fields each year. I feed the pigs, gather grass, wash clothes, haul water, and cook. How does one bowl make me a freeloader?"

Agnes's face darkened. "That money is my support. It belongs to me."

"Then return what Daniel sent for me, and I'll leave tonight. I can live in my parents' old house."

That was the threat Calvin could not tolerate. Elena's family house and plot were still valuable. Once she established herself there as an adult, he could no longer dispose of them quietly.

Agnes seized a carrying pole from the wall.

"You will leave when I say you can leave."

Elena saw the swing coming. She could have stepped away. Instead, she shifted just enough for the pole to drive her arm against a rusted hook beside the table.

Fabric tore. Pain burned across her skin, and blood ran down to her wrist.

The healing force rose instinctively. Elena held it back.

This wound needed witnesses.

She ran through the open gate.

"Help! Mayor Reed! She's trying to kill me!"

Aunt Laura reached her first and nearly dropped the bowl in her hands. Blood had soaked Elena's sleeve.

Neighbors poured from their yards. Elena sagged against Laura, fighting the fever and the pain.

"It was my fault," she whispered. "I should not have eaten fine flour. I should not have asked about Daniel's money. Uncle Calvin says it pays for Agnes's retirement."

The crowd erupted.

An elderly woman pushed forward with her cane. "Calvin Ward, are you unable to support your own mother? Why is your nephew's military pay doing it?"

Calvin appeared at the gate with practiced alarm. "Elena is delirious. I'll take her to the clinic."

He reached for her.

Elena recoiled so violently that the old bruises on her upper arm became visible.

"No. Last time you locked me in the shed. I'll wait for the mayor."

The villagers fell quiet. Calvin's mask slipped for one heartbeat.

Mayor Martin Reed and Security Chief Paul Mercer arrived moments later. Martin took in the blood, the bruises, and the crowd's anger.

Elena let her knees give way.

As darkness closed over her, she heard someone demand that Calvin explain himself.

The truth was no longer trapped inside the Ward house.
