Reborn in 1985: Taking Back My Life

Chapter 10: She Will Not Beg Again

Elena opened her eyes to Calvin kneeling beside her.

His face held perfect concern. Only the tension in his hand betrayed him.

"The child is feverish," he told Mayor Reed. "A family argument became too heated. I'll take her for treatment, and we can discuss the rest after she recovers."

It was a clever retreat. Once the crowd dispersed, Calvin would control the explanation. By morning, Elena would be the ungrateful niece who stole food and attacked an old woman.

Security Chief Mercer examined the torn sleeve. "If Alan Brooks cannot close that wound, take her to the county hospital. If she dies, family disagreement will not protect anyone from the law."

Calvin nodded rapidly and tried to lift her.

Elena pushed his hands away.

"I'm not going with him."

The crowd quieted.

She sat up against Aunt Laura and let everyone see how hard it was to remain upright.

"Agnes said the money from Daniel and my sisters belongs to her. Uncle Calvin says I have eaten his food for four years. I believed that if I worked hard enough, I could earn a place here." Her voice broke, but the decision beneath it did not. "I was wrong."

Vanessa stood near the gate in a new floral blouse and clean canvas shoes. Beside her, Elena's dress was faded almost colorless. Two toes showed through one worn shoe.

The contrast moved through the crowd like a spark.

"Daniel's fabric allowance dresses the cousin while his sister looks like this?" someone said.

Another neighbor began listing the work Elena performed before and after school. Others added what they had seen: Elena cutting firewood in winter darkness, Elena hauling water with a fever, Elena waiting outside while the family ate meat.

Calvin's expression tightened with every voice.

Elena looked directly at Mayor Reed. "I am eighteen. I want the key to my parents' house. I will live there and support myself. I would rather go hungry in my own home than beg here again."

Agnes lunged forward. "We raised you! You owe this family."

Elena met her fury with a cold, steady gaze.

"Raised me? You took the money sent for my care and worked me harder than a hired hand." She paused. "And since you mention family, perhaps we should finally tell everyone whether I am your granddaughter by blood."

All color left Agnes's face.

Calvin stopped moving.

The question exposed a secret deeper than the stolen money, and everyone at the gate knew it.

Elena had not yet recovered her house key or her acceptance letter. She had not made Agnes repay a cent.

But for the first time in either life, the Ward family was afraid of what Elena might say next.
