She Left the CEO and Reclaimed Her Empire
Chapter 130
Selene remained perfectly composed upon hearing Damien was attending the Hartwell family's celebration.
Helena Harrington shared an exceptionally close bond with Marianne Hartwell. Naturally, she'd send Damien as her representative to Marianne's 70th birthday since she couldn't attend personally.
This wasn't news to Selene.
Still, a pang of irritation flickered through her despite knowing Damien's presence was merely following orders.
The guests immediately speculated about trouble between Selene and Damien when they realized he'd chosen the Hartwells' party over hers.
"Madam Harrington and Madam Hartwell are dear friends," Selene stated coolly. "Damien is only there at Madam Harrington's request."
Rumors had circulated about the Hartwell and Harrington families being close.
Yet without visible interactions between them, most dismissed it as mere gossip.
Selene's explanation suggested there might be truth to those rumors after all.
Just then, an attendant entered carrying an ornate gift box toward Selene and the Lancasters.
"Ms. Lancaster," the attendant addressed Selene, "Mr. Harrington encountered unexpected business and may arrive late. Concerned about missing your event, he asked me to deliver this gift on his behalf."
Selene accepted the package gracefully. "Thank you."
Given Marianne and Helena's friendship, it made perfect sense for Damien to pay his respects at Marianne's birthday first.
Clearly anticipating guests would question his relationship with Selene, Damien had thoughtfully arranged for this gift delivery despite his current location. This gesture demonstrated his care and consideration for her.
Moreover, no one could possibly claim Damien didn't value Selene after witnessing such thoughtful gestures.
The guests exchanged awkward glances. While the Lancasters weren't pleased about Damien's choice, they kept their displeasure private. As the tension dissipated, Quentin raised his glass in a toast, thanking everyone for coming.
Thanks to Quentin's intervention, the atmosphere quickly regained its celebratory mood.
Warmth blossomed in Selene's chest at Damien's consideration, melting away her earlier irritation.
Noticing Tristan's continued absence, she turned to Arlo. "Where's Tristan?"
"Let me check."
After a brief phone call, Arlo reported, "He had urgent business and had to leave. He sends his apologies."
"That's fine."
Selene pressed further. "Did he mention what kind of emergency?"
"I didn't ask."
Arlo initially dismissed it, then suddenly remembered. "Could it be related to that woman he likes?"
Selene's smile stiffened. "He hasn't mentioned her recently. I wouldn't know," she replied tersely.
"You're right." Arlo stroked his chin thoughtfully. "We should ask him next time."
Selene lowered her eyes with a quiet "Mm-hmm."
Meanwhile, having settled at the Hartwells' main table, Damien stole a glance at Camille.
Her initial surprise at his arrival had been evident.
But she'd quickly schooled her expression.
Noticing his gaze, she asked flatly, "Something wrong?"
Damien averted his eyes. "Nothing."
