Reborn in 1985: Taking Back My Life

Chapter 1: The Day She Came Back

Pain dragged Elena Ward out of the dark.

Her skull throbbed. When she lifted a hand, her fingers found a swelling beneath her tangled hair. The air was thick with manure, damp straw, and summer heat. Somewhere beyond the thin wall, a sow grunted.

Elena forced her eyes open.

A paper calendar hung crooked on the cracked clay wall. July 8, 1985.

For several breaths, she could only stare.

The last thing she remembered was Vanessa Ward's car bearing down on her. Vanessa had not swerved. She had watched Elena through the windshield with naked hatred and pressed harder on the accelerator.

Yet these were not the hands of the woman who had died on that road. They were narrow and callused, the hands Elena had possessed at eighteen.

She knew this room. Agnes Ward kept her here beside the pigpen, while the rest of the family slept in the brick house across the yard.

Memory snapped into place. Yesterday, Agnes had beaten her with a fire poker because Elena refused to abandon school and take a factory job. In her first life, the fever from that beating had left her unconscious for three days. When she woke, Agnes and Uncle Calvin told her she had failed the national university entrance exam.

It had been a lie.

Her acceptance letter had arrived. They had hidden it, then thrown it into the bamboo thicket behind the ridge. By the time Elena discovered the truth, her future was gone. The family later traded her into marriage with Derek Harlan, a gambler who treated her as property.

Not again.

Elena pressed her palm against the wall until the room stopped spinning. In her first life, she had escaped Derek only to fall from a cliff. At the edge of death, something impossible had awakened inside her: a healing force that sealed her wounds and allowed her to treat injuries no ordinary doctor could touch.

That power had come too late to save her youth, her family, or herself.

But she had returned before any of those losses became final.

Elena searched inward and found nothing. No warmth. No answering current beneath her skin. The force was dormant.

It had first awakened only when her life was slipping away.

Her gaze settled on the rusted sickle in the corner.

Fear tightened her chest. She did not want to die a second time. But remaining powerless meant letting Agnes and Calvin steal the same future again. It meant watching the people who loved her suffer while she obeyed.

Elena wrapped a strip of cloth around her forearm, leaving room to tighten it. Then she picked up the sickle.

"Agnes. Calvin. Vanessa." Her voice was quiet, but each name carried the weight of a grave. "This time, every debt comes due."

The blade touched her wrist.

Pain flashed. Blood welled, and the room tilted into darkness.

Just before consciousness vanished, warmth sparked deep inside her body.

The healing force had heard her.
